University Conversion Formulas Explained

Many Indian universities follow different formulas to convert SGPA, CGPA, or YGPA into percentages. This guide explains the commonly used and officially recommended methods for VTU, MAKAUT, CBSE, DU, and others.

1. VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University)

VTU uses an official formula to convert CGPA or SGPA to percentage:

Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10

This formula is widely accepted for academic and placement purposes.

2. MAKAUT (Formerly WBUT)

MAKAUT uses YGPA/CGPA-based conversion according to their official notifications:

  • CGPA ≥ 9.0 → 90% and above
  • CGPA 8.0 - 8.9 → 80% - 89%
  • CGPA 7.0 - 7.9 → 70% - 79%
  • CGPA 6.0 - 6.9 → 60% - 69%

MAKAUT does not use a straight mathematical formula; it uses grade brackets.

3. CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education)

CBSE's standard conversion formula for CGPA (Class 10) is:

Percentage = CGPA x 9.5

This formula is officially published by CBSE and used for class X marksheets.

4. DU (Delhi University)

Delhi University has its own grade conversion system:

Percentage = CGPA x 9.5

For some departments, DU uses brackets similar to MAKAUT, depending on the program.

5. Common / General Formula

Most universities that do not provide an official method use the following widely accepted formula:

Percentage = CGPA x 10
